Dark and Stormy Drink | Ginger Beer and Rum
Yes, I like my wine… (white, red, rosé … you name it, I like it!) But every once in awhile I come across a cocktail that I’ve just gotta try. And my latest “gotta try it” cocktail is the beautiful, powerful Dark and Stormy Drink.
I first came across this very cool looking drink when we were walking into one of the most beautiful bars overlooking the deep blue ocean that was dotted with craggy rocks and outcroppings off the coast of Bermuda.
Yes, it was pretty fancy-schmancy…. and one of the first things I noticed is that everyone (and, yep, it was pretty much everyone) was sipping on this two-layer concoction I had never seen before. That’s when the bartender introduced me to the Dark and Stormy Drink.
Quick Intro to My Dark and Stormy Video (full video below)
Legend has it that a sailor who nearly shipwrecked off the Bermuda coast (there are tons of shipwrecks surrounding Bermuda) was served this drink when made it to shore safely. He said it reminded him of the dark and stormy skies that often surround the island.
The name stuck and it became the “unofficial” drink of the island of Bermuda. So what gives the dark n stormy its “dark sky” appearance? Two amazing flavors in one! Crisp, tangy ginger beer, topped with rich, luxurious dark rum. Ginger beer on the bottom. Deep, dark rum on top. That’s it! Super easy.
How to Make a Dark and Stormy Drink
Grab a tall and slender glass, fill 2/3 full with ice (see note about ice below), pour 5 ounces of ginger beer over the ice, then top with 2 ounces of the darkest rum you can find. Garnish with a lime wedge and start drinking!
The Dark and Stormy Drink is bursting with flavor. The tangy, sharp, bright ginger beer comes through the rich, caramel-y dark rum as you sip this cocktail, giving you a mouthful of amazing deliciousness.
A note about ice – I love to use large “block” ice cubes in my cocktails that require ice. They melt much more slowly so they don’t water down your flavorful cocktail. (I wrote a full blog post about the ice blocks here if you’re interested in the science behind the different sized ice cubes.) Get your ice block trays here!
So now it’s time for you to grab that glass, get yourself some ginger beer and dark rum, and whip up a Dark and Stormy Drink for yourself! Let me know what you think! Take a picture of it when you make it and tag me on Instagram!
