Homemade Coleslaw Recipe | Ready in 10 Minutes!

This homemade coleslaw recipe can take your summertime meal from good to great! That cool, creamy, zingy, crunchiness that you just can’t get with storebought will elevate your picnic or camping game.

This homemade coleslaw recipe is very simple but packed with flavor. It uses basic ingredients that you likely already have in your pantry. Plus a head of cabbage.

What type of cabbage is best for coleslaw?

I like to use green cabbage in my coleslaw recipe, but either red, green, or a mixture of both will work well. Adding red will give it lots of color. But that means buying two heads of cabbage.

And since I typically make my homemade coleslaw recipe when we’re out camping in our RV, I only like to buy one head of cabbage. So the green wins out!

Feel free to experiment with both types of cabbage to see which one you like best.

How do you make homemade coleslaw?

The basics of making a homemade coleslaw recipe are very simple. All you need is some cabbage and the makings of a simple dressing.

I love a creamy dressing for this one – some mayo, sour cream, horseradish, and other goodies (see full recipe below) all whisked together and poured over the slaw combo.

But my favorite addition that makes this homemade coleslaw recipe the bomb is dice green apples! Love them! That sweet and tart crunch is the perfect balance to the creamy tang of the dressing.

What ingredients are in homemade coleslaw?

  • 1/2 head cabbage, cut into 1 inch squares (I don’t shred it)
  • 2 green apples, diced
  • 4 green onions, sliced crosswise (dark and light green parts)
  • DRESSING:
  • 1/4 cup mayo
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons dill relish
  • 1 tablespoon horseradish
  • 1 tablespoon grain mustard
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper

This recipe is super easy to modify, as well. Don’t like apples? Then don’t use them? Same goes for the dill relish. I do think the horseradish and grain mustard are a must, though! Those really give it that homemade flavor!

And the other trick to making it look truly homemade is how you cut the cabbage. Most store-bought coleslaw recipes come with finely shredded cabbage. I do love it that way, too. But for the homemade look, I always leave my slaw a little chunky. I cut the cabbage into 1 inch pieces.

It’s super easy to cut it that way plus it gives it a great look!

What should I serve with homemade coleslaw?

Coleslaw is a summertime favorite, so anything that goes with summer goes with slaw. I serve mine with these amazing Instant Pot Ribs (that I love to make in my RV!) But this homemade coleslaw recipe also goes well with this Chili Recipe. And of course it goes great with these amazing grilled burgers!
