Happy National Banana Split Day!
Much to my husband’s dismay, I’m not really a dessert person. And he’s got a sweet tooth that just won’t quit. I am remiss in my lack of attention to detail in making sure there’s dessert on the table, especially for special occasions. There have been times (yes, that’s plural, meaning more than once) that we’ve had company over and the idea of serving something for dessert doesn’t even cross my mind. Then at the last minute, my wonderful, thoughtful (sweet-toothed) husband whispers in my ear… should I run out and get an ice cream cake? Perfect! And once again, I get away with not even thinking about dessert.
So imagine my surprise when I heard on the news today that it’s National Banana Split Day, and it actually made my salivary glands kick into high gear! There’s just something about a banana split… that cool, rich ice cream mounded together, lying side by side with a perfectly ripe, yellow, sticky banana, all smothered with hot fudge, salted caramel, whipped cream, some nuts, and a few strawberries on top! There’s almost nothing better! It satisfies all kinds of cravings – sweet, salty, fruity, creamy, sinful…
Upon hearing the news flash about National Banana Split Day (it must have been a slow news day), I couldn’t stop thinking about savoring some of that goodness! So I jumped in the car, ran to my nearest store and piled my shopping basket full of all of those delectable ingredients, returned home, and got to work! It turns out, I can actually make a pretty mean banana split! I guess dessert is on me next time. And boy will that bring a smile to my hubby’s face. 🙂
