Camping Breakfast | French Toast Perfection
The camping breakfast is most definitely one of my favorite meals while we’re out exploring this beautiful country of ours! And French toast has to be one of the best ways to start our camping day.
First things first. I always start with a fresh, piping hot cup of joe. Then it’s time to dazzle the family with a fabulous breakfast. And what could be more dazzling than fresh brioche French toast topped with berries and whipped cream (and maybe a little drizzle of warm maple syrup!)?
What Do You Eat For Breakfast When Camping?
There are so many fabulous camping breakfast ideas. Some of our favorites are these make ahead camping breakfast burritos, this easy breakfast scramble, and these no-cook yogurt parfaits.
But the creme de la creme for us is when I whip out this amazing Brioche French Toast! Soft, fluffy, rich, and flavorful. And it’s easy to go that extra mile with a dollop of whipped cream and fresh berries. Yum!
This recipe can be made on your camp cooktop, your RV stove, or your cast iron skillet over a hot coal bed. It’s light and fluffy, but hearty and flavorful and will keep you satisfied all morning long. Just be prepared for people to want seconds!

What Kind Of Food Do You Take Camping?
It depends… (that’s the lawyer in me coming out! Such a non-committal answer. lol!) Actually, it really does depend. But the answer will differ somewhat depending on whether you’re tent camping, boondocking, or RVing with hookups.
In all cases though, this easy French toast should make it on your list of what food to take camping (unless you don’t have a way to keep the eggs cool, then just skip on over to these no-bake protein balls. Good any time of the day!)
But the basics apply to all kinds of camping – bring foods that are easy to make, easy to clean up, and don’t take up a ton of room. Check out my Top 5 Camping Recipes Free handout here for more ideas. It should have a little something for everyone.
How To Make A French Toast Camping Breakfast
Whisk together eggs, cream, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add butter. Soak brioche slices in the custard mixture and place each piece in the hot skillet. Cook 4 minutes per side. Remove and top with whipped cream, berries, and warm maple syrup. (See full recipe below)
I love to make this camping breakfast French Toast in my new Hestan Cue (the recipe is courtesy of Hestan Cue) pan and single burner induction cooktop when I’m in the RV, but it will work great in any stainless steel, non-stick, or cast iron pan. Use your propane cooktop or even hot coals from a morning campfire! Yum!
Ingredients for French Toast Camping Style:
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- pinch ground cinnamon
- pinch ground nutmeg
- toppings – whipped cream, fresh berries, maple syrup (see full recipe below)
These ingredients are readily available and should be easy to pack. You can use 1 cup of whole milk and eliminate the 1/2 cup heavy cream in a pinch (but it won’t be quite as decadent!).
And if you don’t want to bring a whole bottle of vanilla, just put the 1/2 teaspoon in a little plastic baggie. Likewise with the cinnamon and nutmeg – just mix them together and bring them in a baggie.
I like to use fresh strawberries in season. And to make my camping life easier, I wash and hull them in advance and bring them in my new favorite reusable ZipTop containers! (I LOVE these!!)
Tools used in this recipe:
- Hestan Cue Cooktop and Pan
- Cast Iron Skillet (alternatively)
- Whisk
- Nesting Mixing Bowls
- ZipTop Reusable Containers for fruit
We’re heading out on a 2 week Colorado RV adventure soon and you can be sure that this French Toast Camping Breakfast will be making an appearance! Happy camping!
