  1. If making at home, fresh mussels are great, but if camping, buy frozen (you can find them at most large grocery stores) and bring them in your food cooler or freezer. Thaw before making. Rinse mussels and discard any that are already open. They should still be closed before cooking.
  2. In a large pot warm oil and butter over medium high heat (over the campfire, camp stove, or RV cooktop). Add garlic and cook until fragrant (about 1-2 minutes). Add mussels and stir. Pour wine and broth (or water) over the mussels. Add basil if using. Cover and bring to a simmer.
  3. Keeping lid on, shake pot to evenly distribute the mussels. Steam approximately 5 minutes, then open lid to look at mussels. They should be mostly open at this point. If not, cover, shake the pot to distribute the mussels again, and steam 3-5 more minutes. All mussels should be open. Discard any mussels that have not opened by this point.
  4. Top with parsley (if using) and serve in individual bowls with some of the broth (and lemon wedges if using) and lots of crusty bread for sopping up the broth. Discard all shells and any remaining broth when finished. Enjoy this elegant camping appetizer with friends and family!
